Description
Reuben and Clara Cohen, parents of William S. Cohen, in front of their bakery in Bangor.
Reuben Cohen was a Russian-Jewish immigrant and Clara Cohen was of Irish-Protestant extraction.
William S. Cohen (1940- ), a graduate of Bowdoin College and Boston University Law School, a Republican, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1972-1978 when he was elected to the U.S. Senate.
In 1997, he became Secretary of Defense under Democratic President Bill Clinton.
