Description
British Tower musket, captured at the Battle of Saratoga, Oct 17, 1777. Donated by Col. Frank W. Hume.
This was an English musket used in fighting against the Colonists and was captured from General Burgoynes' army at the Battle of Ssaratoga, October 7, 1777 by the Massachusettes Troops of the Line. When the province of Maine became a separate state and was admitted to the Union, in 1820, some of these muskets from the Massachusetts State House were given to Maine and housed at Augusta, our state capitol. In re-arranging them later, it was found difficult to store one of these and it was assigned to Colonel Frank Hume by the Governor and Council.
