Description
Elihu Benjamin Washburn (1816-1887) was the son of Israel and Martha (Benjamin) Washburn of Livermore. Elihu went to law school and settled in Illinois. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois in 1852 and he stayed there until 1869. In 1869, he became U.S. Minister to France until 1877. Elihu was best known for his personal and political friendships with Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant.
