Description
"This locomotive was built in 1886 for the Portland & Rochester Railroad. The Presumpscot, No. 1, is of standard gauge and has 62-inch drivers for passenger train service. Here we have a great view of the sand pipes going down in front of the forward drivers from the sand dome to drop sandy grit onto slippery rails if extra traction was needed." --Fletcher, David H. "The Portland Company 1846-1982." Charleston, S.C.; Arcadia Pub., 2002. 34.
