Description
Blued steel and gilt blade. Half of blade on both sides painted dark blue with 5 gilt floral designs. Ivory grips carved to give appearance of twisted rope. Brass hilt. Eagle's head on pommel. Banded knuckle bow. Quillon. Langet with seal of the United States (eagle with arrows and olive branches in talons) on one side, plain on other. Fragment of red wool under hilt. Not marked. Dress sword of Major Samuel Sewall, Jr. (1724-1814) of York. Builder/designer of Sewall's Bridge, inventor, furniture maker, architect and influential man in York. Made in France.
