Don't drink the vanilla, Lumber camp, ca. 1910

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Various types of alcoholic beverages were consumed in lumber camps but when supplies got low, it was wise for the cook to hide the vanilla, which had a high alcohol content.

The photographer, Isaac Simpson (1874-1957), was a native of Amity, a small town in Aroostook County. He was a woodsman, hunter, fisherman, blacksmith, wheelwright, carpenter, mason, musician, automobile mechanic, and photographer.
