Barry Dana's Turtle Island basket, Solon, 2016

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Barry Dana, former governor and citizen of the Penobscot Nation, made this birch bark basket featuring the earth on one side, and a turtle on the other. Dana discussed his symbolism in 2019,

There is a story that Mother Earth sits on the back of a turtle. Mother Earth provides for us and we protect her. This traditional value goes beyond laws and regulation, it is a deal that transcends governments, profits, and the perception of power. This is a relationship our people will never break, because we are all connected.
