Description
John Marshall Brown owned this dark blue wool chasseur cap (or kepi) with gold silk trim and a brown silk lining. The cap featured a vent hole at the top and a cap badge made of gold bullion, shaped like a bugle with a central numeral “1” indicating the First Infantry. The chin strap buttons displayed federal infantry designs, featuring the US coat of arms with an eagle facing right and an “I” in the shield to denote infantry.
Inside the cap, a paper label identified the dealer as J.A. Merrill Albion Keith from J.A. Merrill & Co., which specialized in watches, jewelry, military, and Masonic goods. The outfitters were located at 139 Middle Street, Portland.
