Description
When the PSNH closed in 1972, they offered the Maine mineral collections to the Maine State Museum in Augusta. The PSNH sold other minerals at an auction held on Baxter Boulevard in Portland. According to renowned mineral collector and naturalist L.M. “Les” Eastman (1940-2020), who worked with PSNH Director Richard Anderson to disburse the collections, this “undocumented” 110 pound cluster quartz crystal specimen first landed at Maine Audubon Society.
Eastman became a member of the PSNH as a teenager, and remembered seeing this quartz cluster displayed there. A photograph taken by Edward T. Richardson Jr. in the 1960s showed the crystals came from Diamond Ledge in Greenwood, Oxford County, Maine. In 1975, Eastman donated this quartz specimen to the Maine State Museum on behalf of Maine Audubon.
