Description
The midway at the Oxford County Fair of 1908 at Norway/Paris. The Ferris wheel and the merry-go-round were the only amusement rides available at the time.
The Ferris wheel in the photo belonged to E.H. Fellows of Lancaster, New Hampshire. Fellows followed the fair circuit.
The view is northeast, and the photo was probably taken from a second story window of the south ell of the Exhibition Hall. The fair grounds are no longer in existence, having been taken in 1956 for SAD 17 Oxford Hills Cooperative High School.
The Exhibition Hall is the only building remaining from a substantial number of structural facilities belonging to the old fair grounds. It was renovated in the winter of 2003/04 to provide facilities for Western Maine University.
Minnie F. Libby was a skilled photographer who began her career in 1888. She owned and ran the Cottage Studio in Norway from about 1907-1943. Her photos, worked into postcards, were sold at her own booth in the Exhibition Hall.
