Description

The Great Fire of Houlton, May 17, 1902, started in a coal bin in a storage shed in the rear of Dyer's Market behind the Fogg Building on Main Street.

This photograph, facing up from Market Square, shows the fire before it got out of control.

A high, shifting wind blew sparks that spread the fire south-east from here. The fire burned 20 business blocks, three churches(Unitarian, Methodist and Free Baptist) and 75 houses, 111 buildings in all, displacing 80 families.
