Chronometer from the Fishing Ship Archer, ca. 1863

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

This chronometer was salvaged from the fishing ship Archer in 1863.

The chronometer is a precise timekeeper. Because of the motion of the ship, and extreme fluctuations of temperature and humidity at sea, common mechanical clocks could not keep accurate time. An Englishman, John Harrison, invented the chronometer in the 1730s.
