Description
Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, noted for his Civil War service, also served as a professor and later president of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, and as Maine governor for four years following the Civil War.
Chamberlain was born September 8, 1828 in Brewer and died February 24, 1914. He was the son of Joshua and Sarah Brastow Chamberlain.
Chamberlain enlisted in the 20th Maine Infantry on August 8, 1862 as Lieutenant Colonel at age 33.He was promoted to Full Colonel on May 20, 1863 and to Full Brig General on June 18, 1864.
He is known for his bravery at Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, where his troops held the Union line.
