Description
It is necessary to maintain a gap of not more than 1/4 inch between 39 foot rail sections to allow for the expansion of the rails in hot weather. Too small a gap may result in the rails buckeling and derailing a train. Bangor and Aroostook Railroad's magazine, "Maine Line," v. 8 #6, p. 4, 8.
