Description
View of the Eastern Manufacturing Company in 1921.
The mill was started in 1889 when Fred Ayer bought the Palmer and Johnson sawmill in South Brewer.
A sulphite pulp mill was built to make use of the accumulation of slabs and edgings that were previously going to waste.
In the mid-1890s, a paper mill was built on the same site to make use of unsold pulp. That was the beginning of the Eastern Manufacturing Company.
