Description
Octavia and Josephene Thurston were twin daughters of Nathaniel Thurston and Nancy Rose of Bangor. They were born November 4, 1827. The image is from a daguerreotype ca. 1840. According to the Thurston Genealogy (1892, 2nd edition, p. 330), their father, Nathaniel Thurston, "went to Hartland, Maine in 1807 when it was wilderness" and their mother was Nancy Rose of Waterville. They were two of eleven children born to Nathaniel. Their brother, John Rose Thurston, served for three years in the 2nd Maine Cavalry during the Civil War.
This photo depicts an example of early photography, women's period clothing, and is an early examples of twins dressing alike.
