Description

In 1924, students at new South Portland High School ate lunch on the upper wooden banked track in the gymnasium. The gym was iconic with a lower court and an upper track. Later students had a dedicated cafeteria in another part of the school after the annex was built in 1935. The gym track remained intact, as of 2023.

The building, located on a 15-acre lot at the corner of Broadway and Ocean Street in South Portland, was constructed in 1923-24 and was originally the South Portland High School. It became the city's junior high school in the 1950s, named Mahoney Jr. High, and later named Mahoney Middle School, named after Daniel F. Mahoney.
