Portrait of Samuel Dennis Warren, ca. 1880

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Samuel Dennis Warren was born in Grafton, Massachusetts in 1817. Recognized as one of Maine's most successful manufacturers and philanthropists, he began his career at an early age in various entry-level positions for Grant, Daniels & Co., a company dealing in paper and paper stock in Boston.

Warren proved a capable and hard-working employee, and despite his youth and lack of business connections, he rose to become a full-fledged partner in the firm when he was 21.

Warren and his new partners acquired the Day & Lyon's mill in Cumberland Mills (Westbrook), Maine, in 1854 for $28,000. Under Warren's leadership, the mill and the surrounding village grew exponentially. At the time of his death, he employed over 800 workers.

In the mid-1870 there were approximately sixty-six houses in Cumberland Mills, and at the time of S.D. Warren's death, the village had over two hundred houses. The mill erected cottages on Brown Street and Cumberland Avenue for employee housing and even offered mortgage financing for employees.
