Description
Maine Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Wing Commander Guy Gannett posed in uniform with five female volunteers holding a large Maine State flag. After the official creation of CAP in December of 1941, thousands of volunteers offered their services to aid the war effort.
Men and women from every corner of the workforce and socioeconomic classes comprised the ranks of the Civil Air Patrol. During their 18-month mission, civilian volunteers flew 24 million miles, spotted approximately 173 submarines, and located 363 survivors of downed ships. Some patrol planes even carried 100-pound bombs.
