Description
Etching of the residence of Ellis B. Usher in Hollis. Usher was the father of Rebecca Usher.
Though born in Massachusetts, Usher had been sent to Maine by his father to work at the age of 12, and hardly educated. From the age of 12 until he was 19 Usher worked at a store associated with a mill. When he was 19, in 1804, Usher purchased a small farm
Later he bought a mill and kept a store as well. Usher was over all prosperous in business, even through difficult times which he credited to not venturing in to any speculation which he could not think of three different ways to pay back. Ellis B. Usher died in 1855.
