"Sunbeam V" breaking ice in Somes Sound, Mount Desert, ca. 2009

Description

A color image depicts the Sunbeam V breaking ice in Somes Sound, Mount Desert, in front of Able's Boat Yard to clear a safe passage for boats. Captain Mike Johnson was at the helm.

The Sunbeam V is a 74-foot vessel with a 21-foot beam and has been in service since 1995. It was designed by John W. Gilbert of Boston, Massachusetts, and built by Washburn & Doughty in East Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

The ship is powered by a Caterpillar C18 454-horsepower engine, with a cruising speed of 10 knots, two generators, and a 250-horsepower diesel engine. The vessel features a dedicated island health and outreach office and a crew of four full-time members.
