Description
Logging activities have long been a cornerstone of northern Maine's economy. With growing investments in milling operations in places like Van Buren and Ashland and along the Penobscot River at the end of the nineteenth century, extractive activities grew and created demand for labor. Felling usually occurred in wintertime, with logs being driven down to riverside mills in the wake of the spring thaw. The predominantly male labor force often returned to farming communities for the summer.
As of 1917, James Fred Snow, the publisher, was a novelty dealer with a shop on Pleasant Street in Brunswick. The card was printed in the United States. The location of this scene is not given.
