Description
Arthur Schuh, a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in the United States Navy Reserve stationed in Portland, photographed a captured Italian submarine as it docked at the U.S. Naval Base in Casco Bay. "Per La Patria," which translates to "For the Homeland" in English, was inscribed on the top of the tower. The U.S. Navy likely used this vessel for anti-submarine warfare training.
The U.S. Naval Station in Casco Bay played a crucial role in the years leading up to World War II, during the Battle of the Atlantic, and until the end of the war. Operations performed at Casco Bay included anti-submarine training, repair, and resupply for the Naval Fleet, shakedown and refresher training for new or updated ships, escort duty, and harbor defense.
