Lewis Paint Company employees and fleet of trucks, 39 Washington St., Sanford, ca. 1951

Contributed by Sanford-Springvale Historical Society

Description

Theodore Lewis came to Sanford from Portland on February 23, 1948, to open the Washington St. paint store, which he called a “combination store and shop.” At the time of the article, Lewis claimed to have 50 workers and was capable of expanding to 200 when needed. Lewis Paint Co. was believed to be the largest paint contractor in Maine. He merged with Davis Contracting of Rochester, NH, and planned to open offices in Portland and Manchester, N.H. Mr. Lewis was a Marine Corps Veteran of WWII.

Lewis (probably in the dark shirt) had a copy of this photo printed in the February 21, 1952, Sanford Tribune and Advocate, as part of a story about his company. This print was found glued to the inside cover of an unidentified scrapbook bought on eBay.
