Description
Maine’s state motto is Dirigo, or “I lead.” Flutist Fanning G. Maloney from Portland composed the music, and Franklin C. Morris wrote the lyrics for this sheet music honoring the state,
Oh Maine! Thy grandeurs are sublime, with mighty oak and lofty pine
And lake and wood and hill and lea, Maine! Thy cradle rocked by the sea!
‘Tis bays and coves and scenery rare, Maine! To thee none can compare!
Cressey & Allen, whose Portland-based music store occupied the storefront of the Mechanics’ Hall building at 517 Congress Street for forty years, published the song.
