Description
Laura Guimond was born to Denis Guimond and Edith Gagnon in Frenchville in May 1899. She was working as a schoolteacher at the time of her wedding to Emile Bourgoin, also of Frenchville, in 1922. The couple went to live in St. Francis, Maine, where they raised their children: Louis Bernard (Barney), Roger, Robert, Louella or Lewella (Kiki), Mary Ellen (Bee), and James (Bugs). Laura and Emile also adopted Lauraine or Laurine Ouellette, who had been orphaned at a young age. Laura passed away in 1980.
The certificate was likely created in 1910 since the baptismal date includes the wrong year. Laura celebrated her first communion on June 5, 1910, at the church of Sainte-Luce in Frenchville. Though there is a space for the sacrament of confirmation, a date is not given. The document depicts the celebration of successive sacraments; a baptismal oath and an "act of consecration to Mary" appear on each side.
The Catholic parish of Sainte-Luce was the third to be established in the Upper St. John Valley. The church served a predominantly rural population of parishioners of Acadian and French-Canadian descent. Father Thomas L. Bergeron, a native of Quebec, came to Frenchville in the early twentieth century. He was pastor for more than twenty years, during which a new rectory was built and Frenchville experienced the effects of the railroad coming.
