Christian Life Center, Frenchville, ca. 2000

Description

The Sisters of the Holy Rosary, a Quebec-based religious order, began serving the predominantly French Catholic population of Frenchville in 1899. Their primary vocation was education. The first convent was inaugurated in 1902. The Sisters rebuilt after a fire consumed the first structure in September 1905. The same fire had also destroyed the second Catholic church.

As of 1906, the convent school offered elementary and secondary education to both boys and girls and welcomed female boarders.

The second convent served the community for more than fifty years. Under the pastorate of Fr. Zénon Charette (1960-1979), the parish underwent significant transformations. The convent was deemed no longer sound and was demolished. Meanwhile, a new building was erected as a replacement; an inauguration ceremony was held in October 1963.

In light of declining numbers, the Sisters sold the building to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland in the fall of 1980. It became the Christian Life Center, which the diocese designated for spiritual renewal activities in northern Maine. The Sisters remained in Frenchville but moved to a smaller property nearby.
