Description

Evening Express photographers captured this photograph of a large flock, or rafter, of Ram Island Farm turkeys, published in the Monday, November 16th, 1925 edition. Lyman B. Chipman, C.H. Ross, and William R. Woods also posed in the picture.

Ram Island Farm, located on Phineas W. Sprague's estate in Cape Elizabeth, began raising turkeys for sale in the Portland area in 1924, and by 1925, the flock had grown to nearly 300 birds.

According to Lawrence L. Jordan, who oversaw the flock for the farm, the turkeys roamed 500 acres, feasted on grasshoppers, and were fattened on farm products.
