Description

Pictured is the program from the dedication of the air passenger terminal at Bangor International Airport on April 5, 1972.

Bangor International Airport began as Godfrey Field in 1927. In 1933, Amelia Earhart traveled to Bangor on the first flight of Boston-Maine Airways, in which she was an investor. Before World War II, Godfrey Field was taken over by the Army Air Corps and became the Bangor Army Air Field. It operated until 1968 as Dow Air Force Base. It then became Bangor Air National Guard Base. Dow AFB was closed in 1968 as an active-duty Air Force installation. Much of the base was purchased by the city and reopened the following year as Bangor International Airport. BIA is the first major American airport used by planes approaching the United States from the east and the last for planes heading to Europe. The Concorde landed at BIA several times.

Parts of Stephen King’s The Langoliers were filmed in Bangor. Stephen King, an author and former resident of Bangor, has many fans who may recognize the runway and terminal from the movie when flying into the city.
