Description

This Polaroid documents the demolition of Union Station in Portland in August 1961. The station, which opened in June 1888, served as a hub for several railroads but declined in popularity after World War II with the rise of automobile travel. Its demolition served as inspiration for the creation of Greater Portland Landmarks.

Though the photograph is stamped "OCT 61," the building was torn down on August 31, 1961.
