Description
In 1895, photographers captured Cornelia "Fly Rod" Crosby at the "Camp Maine Central" exhibit at the New York Exposition, alongside Maine Guides Ed Grant and James Mathieson. Maine Outings published this photograph in its March 1895 edition.
Born and raised in Phillips in 1854, Crosby wrote, fly-fished, hunted, and promoted Maine's outdoor life while working for the Maine Central Railroad.
She became the first person to receive a Maine Guide license and allegedly was the first woman to shoot a caribou legally in the state. Rumors suggest she also competed in a sharpshooting contest against Annie Oakley. Her column, Fly Rod's Note Book, appeared in syndication across the Eastern United States. She died in 1946.
