Description
Architecture commission for an unknown client at an unknown address in Portland, ME, circa 1914. The commission is associated with Frederick A. Tompson. This item is part of the Frederick A. Tompson architectural drawings collection.
This was possibly a commission created for Dr. Adam Leighton's maternity hospital, although this particular sketch is not of the hospital that was actually built.
Adam Phillips Leighton, Jr, MD was born January 23, 1887 in Portland, Maine, to Adam Phillips and Mary Isadore (Butler) Leighton. During the World War he enlisted as a lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps of the United States Navy, and in 1917 and 1918, while holding that position, rendered patriotic civic service by sitting in the deliberations of the Portland City Council as Alderman; he later became a member of the Common Council and was elected to the presidency of it. Dr. Leighton's Maternity Hospital at 109 Emery Street, established in 1913, was the first in the state.
