Description
Architecture commission for Portland Junior College at Falmouth Street in Portland, ME, 1946. The commission is associated with John Howard Stevens and John Calvin Stevens II Architects. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection.
Portland Junior College was established in 1933, sponsored by the local YMCA in association with Boston University. The college was moved to one half of the Deering Estate on Falmouth Street around 1947, an area today part of the University of Southern Maine. The original barn was built for James Deering (1766-1850) in 1804 from designs of the important architect Alexander Parris (1780-1832), and remodeled by John Howard Stevens and John Calvin Stevens II Architects.
