George B. Morrill house, Portland, 1904-1919

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Architecture commission for George B. Morrill at 22-24 Carleton Street in Portland, ME, 1904–1919. The commission is associated with John Calvin Stevens and John Howard Stevens Architects. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection.

This house may be the home of George B. Morrill of Burnham & Morrill Co., a canning business in Portland. Back in 1867, George Burnham, who previously had been a partner in the canning firm of Rumery & Burnham, started his own business and was joined by John E. Burnham and Charles Morrill. For nearly 50 years, the company was owned by the Burnham family, but in 1910 George B. Morrill, Sr. bought out the Burnham's interest and soon after, B&M moved from 13 Franklin Street, Portland, to its present site on Casco Bay.
