Description

This map, published in the Proceedings of the Portland Society of Natural History, charts Swordfish occurrences along the East Coast of North America, marking locations with dates, catch numbers, and average arrival times.

Founded in 1836, the Portland Society of Natural History was one of America’s first natural history museums. It operated under various names and locations in Portland, surviving two major fires. In 1961, it merged with Maine Audubon, closed to the public in November 1970, and fully integrated with Maine Audubon in 1972. After closing, staff redistributed millions of museum, library, and herbarium items to institutions across Maine and beyond.
