Decorative butter exhibited at the North Aroostook Fair, Presque Isle, 1897

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Mrs. C.E. Creasy displayed butter samples molded into various decorative shapes at the North Aroostook Fair in Presque Isle in 1898. The verso of the photograph indicates that Mrs. Creasy earned first place for premium butter at the fair. A photographer captured the display for inclusion in a 282-page report published by the State of Maine Board of Agriculture.

The Bangor Daily Commercial on Friday, August 5, 1898, praised the report, published by the Burleigh & Flint Company in Augusta under the direction of the Secretary of the State of Maine Board of Agriculture, as a "specimen of bookmaking." The newspaper noted that few trade publications of the day could match its beauty in mechanical detail, clarity of paper, quality of presswork, and handsome illustrations.
