Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission
Description
Eagle Island, located in Penobscot Bay, Maine, once hosted a one-room schoolhouse that operated from 1870 to 1942. Each year, the school educated between five and thirteen students, nearly all members of the Quinn family, who lived on the island as lobster fishermen, farmers, and boat builders. The Mission provided the teacher—Thelma Sargent, wife of Ralph Sargent, the engineer of the Sunbeam III.
Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.
