Stained glass windows at the Head Harbor Island Church, ca. 1930

Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission

Description

The mission built the Head Harbor Island Church in 1910. In 1881, the island's population was 117, supported by the growing granite quarry industry. However, after World War II, shipping granite by water became too expensive, as railroads and trucks transported granite more efficiently from mainland quarries. Additionally, St. Regis loggers stripped the island of its dense virgin forest, prompting many residents to relocate to Beals and Jonesport. Workers dismantled the church in 1941 and repurposed its stained glass windows in a church at Frenchboro.

Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.
