Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission
Description
Pictured in this photograph are Delaney Alley Chambers and an unknown woman, each holding a baby. Delaney Alley Chambers adopted baby Jeannette Pollack and Annie Hoffses Alley. These families were from Head Harbor Island, specifically the community of Sealand.
Sealand, located on the southwest side of Head Harbor Island, reached its peak population of 117 in 1880, with 70 students enrolled in its school that same year. The school closed in 1937. In 1910, the Maine Seacoast Mission built a church there, and from 1890 to 1920, a granite quarry operated on the island, alongside a lath mill that closed in 1928. Most residents were fishermen or farmers.
In the early days, island life was not much of an inconvenience, as most goods were transported by water. However, with the advent of gas-powered engines and improved roads, the advantages of island living for fishermen diminished. As a result, many residents relocated to the mainland, often transporting their homes by barge or across the ice. By the end of World War II, only two or three houses remained on Head Harbor Island.
