Maine Seacoast Mission Church on Head Harbor Island, ca. 1938

Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission

Description

The Mission built the Head Harbor Island Church in 1910, shown here with a woman standing on the front steps in a fur coat. In 1941, workers dismantled the church and repurposed its stained glass windows in a church at Frenchboro.

In 1881, the island’s population reached 117, driven by the growing granite quarry industry. After World War II, high costs made shipping granite by water impractical, as railroads and trucks transported granite more efficiently from mainland quarries.

Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.
