Issue of the "New-England Courant," printed by Benjamin Franklin, Boston, 1723

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

James Franklin (1697-1735) published Boston’s third newspaper, the New-England Courant, between 1721 and 1726. Commonly known as an “independent” newspaper, James frequently ran afoul of the Massachusetts government, at one point imprisoned for his views.

James’s team included his wife Ann Smith Franklin (1696-1763) and his younger brother Benjamin—the Benjamin Franklin of Revolutionary War fame. On occasion, the New-England Courant included essays by Benjamin under the pseudonym “Silence Dogwood.” During James’s imprisonment, Benjamin Franklin printed this February 1723 issue under his own name.
