Albert Beliveau's Judicial Robe, ca. 1950

Description

Albert Beliveau, Maine’s first Franco-American Superior Court judge, presided over the trial of Deputy Sheriff Francis Carroll in the Littlefield murder case. Serving on the Maine Superior Court from 1935 and later on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court (1954–1958), Beliveau was known for his commitment to justice. Born in Lewiston in 1887, he worked in mills and foundries before earning a law degree from the University of Maine in 1911.

He became Maine’s youngest county attorney in 1914 and served in World War I, assisting with French war claims. Beliveau was a strong advocate for veterans and civil rights, he left a lasting impact on Maine’s legal history.
