Description

This photo, taken by Evening Express reporters, shows the road to the garage owned by Otis A. Bean, a 37-year-old guide and letter carrier who was shot three times on October 6, 1922. Bean followed this road to Lone Pine, then turned left to his garage, where the murder occurred.

Authorities arrested two itinerant lumberjacks, Norman Mawson and Jeremiah Wheaton, found outside the garage that night, but released them months later without charges. The investigation then turned to Bean’s wife, Ethel, described by witnesses as "intensely jealous." Forensic analysis and circumstantial evidence led the state to drop charges against her in March 1923. The case, widely covered by Maine newspapers, remained unsolved, with no one ever convicted.
