Description
Chalk portrait of Fanny Longfellow on gray paper in a rectangular gilt frame. She has dark hair and eyes and wears a black lace scarf at the back of her head. This portrait first belonged to her brother, Thomas Gold Appleton. This portrait of Fanny Appleton Longfellow, Henry's second wife, was done by Samuel Rowse in 1859. The drawing now hangs over the fireplace in the Gold Ring Room, Henry Longfellow's bedroom at Craigie House in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as it did when Henry was alive. This is the portrait of Fanny to which Longfellow referred in his poem "The Cross of Snow."
