Portrait of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1854

Contributed by NPS, Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site

Description

Portrait in chalk on cream wove paper. The portrait was made at the request of George Routledge, a London publisher, who had the drawing engraved for one of his books. Routledge sent the English artist Samuel Laurence to Cambridge to make the portrait. Laurence began the work on June 12th, 1854, and finished about a week later. The Longfellow family felt that this was the best likeness ever made of the poet.
