Description

Commissioned by the Portland city government, this section of the film documenting public life in Portland in the 1940s documented Perry Greene and his Chinook dogs sled racing at Riverside Park.

Arthur Walden created a new breed of dog, the Chinook, to support his sled dog activities in New Hampshire in 1917. Pairing a Mastiff cross named Kim with Ningo, a descendant of Polar explorer Donald MacMillan’s Greenland Husky, Polaris, resulted in three puppies. Walden named one "Chinook" after a sled dog he worked with in Alaska. All Chinook dogs trace their lineage to this original dog.

Perry Greene took over the New Hampshire-based Wonalancet-Hubbard Kennel from Julia Lombard in 1940. Greene moved the kennel to Warren, Maine, and later to Waldoboro. Perry Greene promoted himself as the only breeder of Chinooks, and his kennel was the longest single breed owner between 1940 and 1981.Greene also supported dog sledding, racing his dogs at a competition at Riverside Park in Portland.

During February 1941 Perry Greene and his stepson, Johnny Gephart, and seven Chinooks hauled eight hundred pounds of equipment via dog sled from Fort Kent to Kittery, five hundred and two miles in ninety hours.
