Description
The Quimby School in Winterville Plantation still stands and serves as the municipal office. Its educational vocation had changed by the time this photograph was taken in 1981. A local resident states that kindergarten through eighth grade were taught in that building until 1966. ACAP (Aroostook County Action Program) Head Start used the space from 1984 to about 1998. Inquiries at the town office did not return further information.
Winterville was organized in the late nineteenth century. For a time it was sustained by the lumber industry. Now with a population of several hundred residents, it draws seasonal visitors who take advantage of wilderness areas to hunt and fish. It is one of a small number of plantations in Aroostook, including the Cyr and Saint John plantations.
