Description
Levite V. Thibodeau (1868-1938) was the son of Vital Thibodeau and Methaïde Duplessis. He studied at Ricker Classical Institute, articled in law in Caribou, and became an attorney. He practiced in Van Buren. He married Alma Pelletier in 1898. He took an active part in local social organizations and contributed to the development of the town. He co-founded the Van Buren Trust Company and later helped establish the First National Bank of Van Buren. He was embroiled in several controversies in the 1910s. In 1914, he ran for a seat in the state legislature. The initial tally gave him a majority. However, a review of the result and a vote of the legislature in January 1915 turned the seat over to his opponent, Democrat Fortunat Michaud.
In 1916, Thibodeau, who was a native of Canada, faced potential disbarment when it came to light that he might not have obtained citizenship. A court case found in his favor in December 1916 due to his father's American citizenship.
His brother, Paul D. Thibodeau (1880-1938), moved to Fort Kent in 1904 and married Mary Alice (Mamie) Nadeau two years later. He had founded Thibodeau Insurance Agency in 1902. The business continues to operate under the United Insurance banner. Thibodeau also became the distributor for Maxwell Automobiles throughout the St. John Valley. He served as a member of the board of directors and as president of the First National Bank of Fort Kent. He served as town treasurer in 1913, was elected to the legislature in 1914, and later became president of the Fort Kent Historical Society. He authored a pamphlet on the early history of Fort Kent, which the bank published.
The brothers are photographed with their spouses at their side. Lévite and Alma are seated; Mary Alice and Paul are standing. The image is undated, but the fashions suggest an early twentieth-century (pre-World War I) date. It would have been taken in or after 1906, when Paul and Mary Alice married.
