Description
This certificate, issued by Stephen Hall, Chairman of the Committee of Safety, affirms that Captain William McLellan of Falmouth (now Portland, Maine) was authorized to travel to Portsmouth to obtain provisions for himself and neighbors. The document identifies McLellan as a resident of Falmouth and as “an attached and active friend to the American cause,” entrusted with transporting the goods back to his home community.
William McLellan Sr. was the son of Bryce McLellan and the brother of Joseph McLellan. He was also the father of Major Hugh McLellan and Stephen McLellan, who both built prominent Federal-style mansions on High Street in Portland around 1800.
