Description
This is probably a copy Franquinet made in 1840 of his 1839 original portrait of Longfellow at age 32.
Longfellow found the 1839 portrait "exceedingly like" and recommended the artist to his friends.
Samuel Ward gave Longfellow a portrait of himself, also done by Franquinet.
Wilhelm Hendrik Franquinet (1785-1854), a 55-year-old Belgian portrait painter and lithographer, had emigrated to the U.S. in 1836. He and Longfellow remained friends for many years.
